David H. Slater, Associate Professor, Cultural Anthropology and Japanese Studies, Sophia University

Center for Japanese Studies (CJS)

In the face of the triple tragedies that befell Japan on March 11th, 2011, one story that is still developing is that of volunteer activity. Thousands of citizens have become mobilized in ways that were almost unimaginable before, from digging toxic mud in Tohoku to staging anti-nuke protests in Tokyo, the largest in Honshu since the 1970’s ANPO demonstrations. This talk lays out the different stages of disaster and relief, the ways in which information, people and goods have circulated throughout Japan, and the different types of volunteering that have made such a difference. While this situation is always changing, Slater will also lay out some of the possible options for volunteer work in the coming months.

Thanks to Haasies' generosity, we collected $317 in total, 60+ donors with $5 average of donation to support Japan's recovery from the earthquake. All the donations was sent to Japanese Red Cross Society. We would like to say special thanks to those who made this happen and donated!

Haas Bake Sale

Our first charity event occurred on campus.

When: March 16th, 11:00-2:00pm

Where: Haas BoA forum

Here's the report from the leading organiser.

Dear Haas,

The Haas Japan Team would like to thank you with all of our hearts for your show of support today at our first Japan Disaster Relief Drive. With your support we have been able to raise $2,207 from the bake sale donations, and an additional $300 from Laksa Pho King profits for a total of $2,507!

We estimate that anywhere between 120 -160 people stopped by our table today making average donations of $13 -$18 per person.
We believe this is a great example of the strength of the Haas community, and we have no doubt that the tight bond we have is what makes Haas not only the best business school, but the best group of people we have had the privilege to be a part of.

The situation in Japan remains a dire one. The rescue, recovery, and rebuilding efforts will surely take a long time, most likely several years. We sincerely hope that you keep us somewhere in your hearts , as we the Haas Japan Team will continue our donation support efforts after we return from Spring Break.

Thanks once again. Go Bears!
